![]() Following the first game Soul Edge in 1995, the Soul series received a major makeover and was retitled Soulcalibur in 1998. The Sega Dreamcast port is often cited as one of the greatest fighting games of all time, and even one of the greatest games across all genres it is ranked as the fifth-best game of all-time by review aggregator site Game Rankings. Soulcalibur was ported to and released for the Sega Dreamcast in 1999 with improved graphics and new features, and became one of the best-selling Dreamcast titles of all time. Soulcalibur ( ソウルキャリバー, Sourukyaribā ?) is the second game in the Soul series of fighting games developed and produced by Namco. Raster, 640 x 480 pixels (Horizontal), 65536 colors Everyone who’s even remotely interested in gaming owes it to themselves to experience this piece of history - games like this don’t happen often, folks. For game's titular sword, see Soul Calibur. ![]() Soul Calibur has sold many Dreamcast systems (my own and all my friends’ as well), and at the price the system and the game are now, it’s an ABSOLUTE STEAL. ![]() Namco has produced a work of art that also happens to be the most flawless game I’ve ever played - a year later it’s still the most played game on my Dreamcast and I’m still discovering new moves and techniques. People are still talking about the huge leap Soul Calibur represents for fighting games. Helped by pinpoint control, beginners and veterans alike will find no end to the depth of the fighting engine that the 8-Way Run system opens up, allowing your fighter mobility across the entire surface of the arena. Mission Mode and the huge unlockable Art Gallery send replay value through the roof, but the true treasure here is the combat system. The graphics are flawless 60 fps glory, the sound crystal, the backgrounds enthralling. Soul Calibur introduced so many new ideas to the genre of 3D fighting that it’s hard to think how anyone will surpass it: the 8-Way run system and Guard Impact are just two of them. A lot of people say Tekken Tag for the PS2 is a better game, but Tag is merely a rehash of Tekken 3 with updated graphics, and Dead or Alive 2 just doesn’t have the same shine. This game is a must-have for Dreamcast owners.Įven though it’s over a year old, Soul Calibur is not only the best-looking Dreamcast game there is, it’s the best 3D fighting game on the planet. Even ultra hard mode, can be easily won by a competent Soul Calibur player.(although button mashers can win the first two stages). But all in all this is a solid fighting game. Another problem, the final Boss, Inferno. The survival mode, while great, is just too easy. In my opinion, Time attack mode, is useless. The mssion mode, which adds even more to replay value, and the cool museum mode. For the most part, this game has alot of relay value, lots of of unlockable characters. Although, in 3-d fighting games(like Tekken and, of course Soul Calibur), you cant pull off impressive, beautiful, combos with just button mashing. That is my compliant about all 3-d fighting game(as opposed to earlier, Street Fighter2, And Street fighter alpa, series games.), is that button mashing can get you over. Although my only compaint is that a button masher can beat the computer. This is a very strategic fighting game, And it is extremely deep gameplay. Being a big fan of the arcade version, I must say(for the billionth time), that this one surapasses the arcade version. There is doubt about it, this was the game that showed the dreamcast could be a major competitor.
